英語中那些奇奇怪怪的數(shù)字短語盤點

英語中有很多與數(shù)字有關的短語

有的可以根據(jù)字面意思直接翻譯

有的則與數(shù)字本身意思不一致

今天就來簡單看幾個有趣的“數(shù)字短語”

up to the nines

中國人常常用“三”字表示多，例如“三人”可以“成虎”，“三折肱”就可以“為良醫(yī)”，“一日不見如隔三秋”“士別三日當刮目相看”等等。

三的三倍是九，九當然比三多，所以九牛一毛、九死一生等等，更是夸張得無以復加了。

對信奉上帝、耶穌、圣靈三位一體的西方人來說，“三”則往往有“完美”的涵義。三三當然更是完美得無以復加了。

所以天主教的天使要分九級(nine orders)，天主教的信徒要有連續(xù)九天的祈禱儀式，英國倫敦更是連求救電話號碼都是幸運的九九九。

總之，up to the nines對英國人來說是“十全十美”、“至高無上”的意思

例如

He is honored up to the nines.

他獲得至高的尊崇。

現(xiàn)在，該成語一般只和dress一字連用，指“盛裝”

例如:

He was all dressed up to the nines for the interview.

為了參加面試他穿得西裝筆挺。

three sheets in the wind

酩酊大醉

sheet 的一個詞義是"系在帆下角的金屬環(huán)上的帆腳索"。如果帆腳索沒有系上扣，船帆就可以任意隨風飄揚,船員們稱之為 in the wind。A sheet in the wind由此成為船員們一句口頭語，表示tipsy(微醉)。Three sheets in the wind 自然是大醉特醉了。

The man who passed down the street was three sheets in the wind.

街上走過的那個人已是酩酊大醉。

由three組合成的習語還有：

three score and ten -- 古稀之年

score在表示數(shù)字時是"二十" 的意思

盡管這一習語中的數(shù)字加起來是七十，但在引喻中只是泛指老年而已。

one-horse town

鄉(xiāng)村小鎮(zhèn)

這一短語源自美國，由小鎮(zhèn)僅擁有一匹馬而來。

Would you want to live in a small, one-horse town for your whole life?

你想在一個閉塞落后的小鎮(zhèn)上過一輩子嗎?

由此引申，one-horse現(xiàn)在可以表示 "極小的、簡陋的、次要的"

如： one-horse show 小型展覽會

由one組合成而又毫無 "一" 這一含義的習語還有：

(1)He was one too many for me.

我不是他的對手。

(2)number one

自己

由此而衍生出：

最后時刻
