“打盹”不是真的要“打”，所以它的英語表達(dá)中并沒有beat一詞。它是指“小睡一會兒”，用take a catnap來表示。

同事們都不喜歡瑪麗，因為她愛打別人的小報告。

打照面

與前面的幾個短語相似，“打照面”的英語表達(dá)中也沒有beat一詞，這個詞的意思是“見到面”，即meet face to face。

Tom met Lily face to face as soon as he got off the plane.

湯姆剛下飛機就和莉莉打了個照面。

A:I have to meet Jim face to face.Good-bye.

我得去和吉姆打個照面，再見。

B:OK.Bye.

好的。再見。

“打照面”還可以用encounter“遇到”來表示

“分寸”可不能直譯為cent and inch，這個詞的意思是“合理的行為標(biāo)準(zhǔn)”，可以用social graces來表示。

A:Mr.Smith is a well-educated gentleman.

史密斯先生是個受過良好教育的紳士。

B:Yes,he behaves with social graces.

在英語中用be busy表示
