【笑話原文】

One Side of the Case A judge asked our group of potential jurors whether anyone should be excused, and one man raised his hand. "I can't hear out of my left ear," the man told the judge.

"Can you hear out of your right ear?" the judge asked. The man nodded his head.

"You'll be allowed to serve on the jury," the judge declared. "We only listen to one side of the case at a time."

一面之詞 一位法官問(wèn)我們這群修補(bǔ)陪審員是否有人應(yīng)當(dāng)免權(quán)。一個(gè)人舉起了手。 “我的左耳聽(tīng)不見(jiàn)。”那人告訴法官。 “你的右邊耳朵聽(tīng)得見(jiàn)嗎?”法官問(wèn)道。那人點(diǎn)了點(diǎn)頭。 “我們?cè)试S你加入陪審團(tuán)，”法官宣布。“我們每次只聽(tīng)一面之辭。”

【詞匯講解】

1.potential替補(bǔ)的。也可以作名詞使用：This new invention has an enormous sales potential.這項(xiàng)新發(fā)明有巨大的銷(xiāo)售潛力。

2.excuse使免除。也有“辯解”的意思：He who excuses himself exposes himself.越為自己辯解的人越暴露自己的錯(cuò)誤。

3.hear out聽(tīng)完。They heard the story out in silence.他們靜靜地聽(tīng)完故事。
