第四十四課 鄉(xiāng)村鐵匠

Under a spreading chestnut tree

在伸展開的栗子樹下

The village smithy stands;

鄉(xiāng)村鐵匠站在那；

The smith, a mighty man is he,

鐵匠，是一個(gè)力氣很大的人，

With large and sinewy hands;

有著一雙大而有力的手；

And the muscles of his brawny arms

他手臂上的肌肉很結(jié)實(shí)

Are strong as iron bands.

仿佛鐵環(huán)一樣強(qiáng)壯。

His hair is crisp, and black, and long;

他的頭發(fā)卷曲、濃黑又長；

His face is like the tan;

他的臉被曬得黝黑；

His brow is wet with honest sweat;

眉毛被誠實(shí)勞動(dòng)的汗水打濕；

He earns whate'er he can;

他掙著自己應(yīng)該掙的錢；

And looks the whole world in the face,

并且看起來整個(gè)世界都在他的臉上，

For he owes not any man.

Week in, week out, from morn till night

一周周過去了，從日出到日落

You can hear his bellows blow;

你能聽見他的風(fēng)箱在吼叫；

You can hear him swing his heavy sledge,

你能聽見他在擺動(dòng)他的大鐵錘，

With measured beat and slow,

那謹(jǐn)慎又緩慢的敲打，

Like a sexton ringing the village bell,

就像是教堂司事在夕陽低垂時(shí)，

When the evening sun is low.

敲響著鄉(xiāng)間的鐘聲。

And children, coming home from school,

孩子們，從學(xué)校放學(xué)回家，

Look in at the open door;

從敞開的門往里看；

They love to see the flaming forge,

他們愛看那紅紅的爐火，

And hear the bellows roar,

聽著風(fēng)箱的轟鳴，

And catch the burning sparks that fly

捕捉燃燒跳躍著的火焰

Like chaff from a thrashing-floor.

就像從打谷場里出來的糠一樣。
