secretary 都是秘書(shū)嗎？

說(shuō)起辦公室里的secretary，可能我們的第一反應(yīng)都是秘書(shū)，不過(guò)下面這個(gè)句子要注意了：

“I chose the tall secretary where mother sat so often writing letters by a sunny window.”

翻譯這句話時(shí)要格外小心，否則就會(huì)把tall secretary譯成“高個(gè)子秘書(shū)”，豈不鬧出笑話？

其實(shí)secretary在這里是一種書(shū)寫(xiě)的桌子，一般上面還附有一個(gè)小書(shū)架，所以全話的意思是：

我選擇了那個(gè)高大的寫(xiě)字桌，過(guò)去每逢陽(yáng)光明媚的日子，媽媽常坐在窗前的桌旁寫(xiě)信。

secretary的意思還有很多，除了常見(jiàn)的“秘書(shū)”之外，還表示“書(shū)記”，如中共中央總書(shū)記的英文是the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China，省委書(shū)記是Secretary of a provincial Party Committee，書(shū)記處是secretariat，它是secretary的變體。秘書(shū)長(zhǎng)的順序正好和總書(shū)記相反，是Secretary General，如聯(lián)合國(guó)秘書(shū)長(zhǎng)是the Secretary General of the United Nations。

還有許多職務(wù)從中文字面看并沒(méi)有“秘書(shū)”字樣，但英語(yǔ)仍需用secretary，如美國(guó)國(guó)務(wù)卿（the Secretary of State）、財(cái)政部長(zhǎng)（the Secretary of Treasury）、教育部長(zhǎng)（the Secretary of Education）、國(guó)防部長(zhǎng)（the Secretary of Defense）等。
