What of it, if some old hunks of a sea-captain ordersme to get a broom and sweep down the decks?

倘若有個(gè)大塊頭的船長(zhǎng)命令我去拿把掃帚來(lái)打掃甲板,那又算得什么呢?

What does that indignity amount to, weighed, Imean, in the scales of the New Testament?

我說(shuō),這種羞辱,要是拿到《新約》的天平上去稱一稱的話,究竟能有多少分量呀?

Do you think the archangel Gabriel thinks anythingthe less of me, because I promptly and respectfullyobey that old hunks in that particular instance?

難道說(shuō),因?yàn)槲以谶@件事情上迅速而尊敬地聽(tīng)從了那個(gè)大塊頭的命令,你就以為迦伯列天使長(zhǎng)會(huì)瞧不起我嗎?

Who ain't a slave?

誰(shuí)不是奴隸?

Tell me that.

你倒說(shuō)說(shuō)看。

Well, then, however the old sea-captains may order me about--however they may thump andpunch me about, I have the satisfaction of knowing that it is all right;

唔,那么,不管那些個(gè)老船長(zhǎng)怎樣把我呼來(lái)喝去...不管他們會(huì)怎樣的捶打我,我還是認(rèn)為很對(duì),感到心滿意足;

that everybody else is one way or other served in much the same way-either in a physical ormetaphysical point of view, that is;

反正人人都是這樣那樣受人奴役的...就是說(shuō),從形而下或者形而上的觀點(diǎn)上都是受人奴役的;

and so the universal thump is passed round, and all hands should rub each other's shoulder-blades, and be content.

所以,普遍的重?fù)舸蛄艘晦D(zhuǎn)后,大家又相互拿手摩摩對(duì)方的肩胛骨,還是安份些吧。

Again, I always go to sea as a sailor, because they make a point of paying me for my trouble,whereas they never pay passengers a single penny that I ever heard of.

再說(shuō),我所以總是出海去當(dāng)水手,是因?yàn)樗麄儽仨毥o我錢來(lái)酬勞我的辛苦,我可從來(lái)沒(méi)有聽(tīng)說(shuō)過(guò)他們給船客一個(gè)子兒過(guò).
