譯文：大國(guó)是天下人前往的目的地，是眾人歸附、聚集的地方，是充滿吸引力和蘊(yùn)藏?zé)o限生機(jī)的地方。雌性一貫用來贏得雄性的方法，就是用安平寧?kù)o來顯示她的謙下。因此，大國(guó)如果能謙讓和禮遇小國(guó)，就能獲得小國(guó)的歸附；小國(guó)如果對(duì)大國(guó)恭謹(jǐn)順服，就可以獲得大國(guó)的強(qiáng)助。所以說有的用謙下獲得了歸附，有的用謙下獲得了強(qiáng)助。大國(guó)的目的只是要得到別人的歸附，小國(guó)的需要無(wú)非是想獲得別人的幫助，雙方都能從謙下中獲得自己的需要，那么還是由勢(shì)力強(qiáng)大的一方表示謙下更合適。

《道德經(jīng)》（第六十一章）

大國(guó)者下流，
天下之交，
天下之牝。
牝常以靜勝牡，
以靜為下。
故大國(guó)以下小國(guó)，
則取小國(guó)；
小國(guó)以下大國(guó)，
則取大國(guó)。
故或下以取，
或下而取。
大國(guó)不過欲兼畜人，
小國(guó)不過欲入事人。
夫兩者各得其所欲，
大者宜為下。

Chapter 61
A large state is like a low-lying estuary,
the female of all under heaven.
In the congress of all under heaven,
the female always conquers the male through her stillness.
Because she is still, it is fitting for her to lie low.
By lying beneath a small state,
a large state can take over a small state.
By lying beneath a large state,
a small state can be taken over by a large state.
Therefore,
One may either take over or be taken over by lying low.
Therefore,
The large state wishes only to annex and nurture others;
The small state wants only to join with and serve others.
Now,
Since both get what they want,
It is fitting for the large state to lie low.
